Eddie & The Wolves

Eddie and the Wolves

If Fleetwood Mac had a baby with Biffy Clyro, and that baby was obsessed with Stevie Ray Vaughn the result would most definitely be the Blues Rockers that are Eddie & The Wolves. Born from the ashes or a previous project, founder member Eddie Saffell felt the need to start a band that focussed more on Classic Rock influences, and so the search started to find like-minded musicians who were all reading of the same page with similar tastes and passions.
But not trying to reinvent the wheel, Eddie soon found a band of brothers who he could rely on who not only realized his dream, but saw his who saw his vision, and soon found a sound of their own.

This amalgamation of a mixture of vintage and modern technology in the studio, embrace both sides of the recording process, and as a result, through utilizing synthesisers and modern recording techniques, they soon succeeded in creating their very own hybrid.

Formed in 2018 in Derby, here in the UK, Eddie And The Wolves make their presence known across the East Midlands, slowly radiating their sound around the UK and stirring up crowds at festivals and clubs through the heart of England, including the Y-Not Festival and many independent venues that are the life blood of Rock n Roll today, and what makes Britain Great.

Along the way they have opened for Slade, Razorlight and Reef and shared stages with Arrielle, members of The Struts and Kelsey Karter, with a lineup consisting of Eddie Saffell – The Alpha Wolf – guitar & vocals, Char Saffell – The Luna Wolf – vocals & percussion, Kieran Harris – The Omega Wolf – bass and Liam Foster – The Delta Wolf on drums.

The members have all been performing for a number of years, first picking up their chosen instrument at a young age, with Char originally the songwriter, before becoming a full time member in 2020.

Eddie, The Alpha Wolf, draws his inspiration from Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Biffy Clyro and Fleetwood Mac, and now proudly fronts the band courtesy of his mentors.

Char, The Luna Wolf, tailors her style with Tash Sultana, Slipknot, Brother and Bones, Billie Eilish and Atilla by her side, who not only sets the standard in her performance, but her lyricism also.

Kieran, The Omega Wolf, cut his teeth with The Cure, Queen, The Who, Rage Against the Machine, Joy Division, and Queens of the Stone Age, and now cuts the perfect groove with partner in crime Liam in the rhythm section.

Liam, The Delta Wolf, leans on The Mars Volta, Biffy Clryo, Prince, Rival Sons and Queens of the Stone Age to create his thunder, and now sits proudly on the riser, stoking the engine with wingman Kieran on bass.

As a band, although a style of their own, Jimmy Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Greta Van Fleet and Rival Sons sets the standard in their style in both performance and composition.

In a recent interview, I asked them what drives them as a band, they told me;

“We have a huge love of creating music together and all the other jobs that come with being an independent musician. Not only are we musicians writing music, but we create all our own music videos and artwork. We love working as a team on all the creative projects for Eddie & The Wolves.”

With that said, I asked what the meaning was behind the band name, they replied;

“Years ago Eddie was a solo act, and had a band together, and named it Edd Saffell & The Wolves, this carried across when Edd decided to create a band.”

I followed this up by asking Eddie about their songwriting process and how they would overcome any creative blocks, they explained;

“Step 1- Listen to a new band. Step 2- Become obsessed with a new band. Step 3- Try and write a song as good as the new band, or inspired by the new band. Step 4-. Fail. Step 5- Cry. Step 6- Ask Char to write some lyrics. Step 7. Go into a rehearsal room and rewrite the initial idea. Step 8- Success. I force myself to write every day. And I have for the last 8 years. Even if it’s 10 seconds, I sit at the computer and write something. I like to put my ideas straight down. I have a pretty substantial home studio where we do all of our recording and production.”

And that brings me nicely to the album in question here, War.

This change of direction in band and sound was certainly a wise move, as what lies on display throughout this entire album is the romance of a very familiar sound with a 2021 twist of technology that keeps giving the more it’s played.
The vocal delivery from Eddie and Char, although well enunciated, leaves you hanging on to every word, in reflection of a time in your life or a long forgotten memory, crafted from the creative mind and pen of a true observationalist, who simply takes life, and makes it sing.

Musically, this overture of originality colours the airwaves in many ways, with a rich tapestry of sound that soothes the soul, frees the mind, and at the same time keeps feet tapping and the air punched from sofa to stage. With many pleasing preludes of perfection teasing the start of each track, this album ticks all the right boxes in a multitude of genres, with every song a multifaceted manifestation of musical masterpieces.

Star Rating – 10/10

Star Suggestion-

If ever there were four tracks to tempt the listener into buying this album they would be-

“Through It All”, “Blind”, “War”, and Burning Embers.”

To close, I asked the Eddie if there was anything else he wanted our readers to know, he wrapped things up by telling me;

“We’re loyal to our fans, make friends with us, we love chatting to new people, we’re always happy to help so just ask.”

So why not clear a space in your collection and give Eddie And The Wolves a try for 2021.
